Lénaïg is an invention of mine and I had a lot of fun writing her into the story. She is a serving maid to Henry’s surrogate mother at Threlkeld Hall and over time falls deeply in love with Henry. She is the perfect counterpoint to the aristocratic Nut Brown Maid and serves to contrast between Henry Clifford’s no-nonsense pastoral lifestyle and the alien world of courtly manners and status. The spat she has when her rival appears on the scene and her undying love for Henry provide a perfect love triangle that sits well with the overall plot. She bears Henry a son in the novel.
