Tom Lawkland is the central character in the book and narrates his own interpretation of events in many of the scenes. He risks his life and that of his family, to raise the young Henry out of loyalty to the latter’s father John Clifford, and the plain milk of human kindness that is his stock in trade. His direct, clear thinking approach to life is a major influence on his young ward and this shines through as we see the young man mature into a compassionate, yet tough individual. Thanks to Tom’s inspiration, we see Henry Clifford successfully restored to his lands and this novel develop from a very bleak setting to one of those life affirming moments that make us all realise what a good place the world can be.
